Different strokes for different folks. I believe it's easy, even for a professional, to miss the attributes of an elegant, subtle wine in a large line-up with bolder, more tannic wines. I just use a critics opinion as a guide on what to try, not on what is considered good. I know what I like. I use their qualitative descriptions as much as I use their quantitative rating. There is too much emphasis on a wine being 90+. I thought I didn't know what I was talking about. It gave me pause, but a second tasting confirmed my earlier opinions. My palate may be flawed, but it's the one I have to please. No general rule: I sometimes questioned my judgement, whereas I was totally sure to be on the right side of the judgement in other cases.
