Enjoying the slow life

Carlos the nerite snail
(Neritina natalensis)

Carlos on the aquarium glass

Carlos is a spotted nerite snail who lives in his little aquarium, in the corner of our living room. Nerite snails are fun to observe, very peaceful, low-maintenance and rather hardy. Their shells have beautiful colors and patterns, and they do an excellent job cleaning algae off of the aquarium glass, plants, and decorations. Their lifespan is typically 1-2 years. Although they thrive in both freshwater and salt water, they require salt water to reproduce. Nerite snails can breathe air, so they can occasionally climb out of water.
