Yoga is an ancient practice of physical, mental and
spiritual practices that originated in India and the Himalayas in the
5th century B.C.E. Yoga aims to control yoke and still the
mind, recognising a detached witness-consciousness untouched by the mind
(Chitta) and mundane suffering (Duḥkha). Regular yoga
practice is beneficial in many ways. The physical element of yoga is
based on a series of asanas and helps you strengthen your muscles and
improve your balance, your flexibility and your posture. The breathing
and meditatative elements of yoga help you relax, rejuvenate and calm
your mind. There are many styles of yoga.
Hatha Yoga is the most popular. Today,
yoga is practiced by approximately 300 million people worldwide.
