Square or cube watermelons are grown into in cubic shape. Although common in Japan, they remain for ornamental and space-saving purposes. The process entails growing the watermelons in boxes. The shape makes it easier to transport, cut, and store. These watermelons sit snug and neatly inside compact Japanese refrigerators, and they make extravagant gifts.

Believe it or not, the concept was birthed by a graphic designer named Tomoyuki Ono. The craze spiked a dramatic increase in price, costing about $125 USD.
