Basenjis are may have the title of one of the oldest breed. Paleontologists tell us that the first domesticated dogs looked a lot like Basenjis. They were brought from interior Africa as gifts for the Pharaohs. Basenjis are depicted in ancient Egyptian artifacts, and can also be seen in ancient Babylonian and Mesopotamian art.
Basenjis are energetic, inquisitive, and very active. Their instinct to hunt is very strong: They have keen eyesight, explosive speed and highly developed sense of smell. Anything fluffy and running will be their target.
They groom themselves like cats do and have no a doggie smell. Basenji don’t like water nor swimming. Rainy weather - better to stay home. They like to climb higher and watch. When they sleep, they take very funny and unusual poses.
Basenjis are Barkless dogs, however they still make yodeling
noises,
just watch this
And there's a saying: "With dogs you give commands, with cats you make suggestions." Well, that's not far off from the Basenji. Basenjis are alert and careful with strangers, open and calm with friends. They are an extremely energetic and intelligent breed so they needs regular mental and physical activity.
