Welcome to Striking Stills in Horror, a website dedicated to shots in horror movies that haunt film nerds around the world! We accept submissions showcasing stills that embody striking cinematography in the horror genre. First Place

• Nope (2022)

  This still is from the latest Jordan Peele film Nope (2022). In this scene the beautiful big ranch house is gushes blood; a stark contrast to the painted white wood, with heavy rain pouring down as the camera pans upwards to the ominous clouds above. Though this film was found to be disappointing amongst Peele’s fans (you can read a review here) this image invoked classic horror tropes and signified the climax of the movie when everything starts to go wrong. The release of blood and tears also mirrors the grief the characters in the film are unable to shed from the loss of their father. We chose this amongst submissions because this capture of the house made it seem that the house was alive for a moment, and marked the change of tone in the slow-moving pace of the film to full- blown horror.
  
  

Second Place



• Men (2022)

  This scene is from the A24 film Men, where we see the protagonist Harper taking a bite out of an apple, illuminating the central theme of the film of women being "responsible" for original sin. In the movie Harper is constantly chased by not only the memory of her departed fiance, but every male she encounters, and is blamed for their actions. Her denial of their desire results in their violence in trying to ascertain her mind and body and this striking scene alludes to the biblical analogy of how women are to blame for the evils of men.
