Violence in Nigeria.

The term "violence" is complex and does not admit to a certain definition. In other words, conceptualization of violence is variegated. More often than not, experts and contributors in the field of peace and conflict conceptualize violence from their experience.

Types of violence in Nigeria.

The developer identifies the forms of violence perpetrated in Nigeria in the fashion of eminent and erudite peace scholars, namely, Johan Galtung, Van Soest and Byrant. The forms of violence includes, direct violence, institutional violence, structural violence and cultural violence.

Direct violence

Direct violence is a harmful action against an individual, people or property. Examples of direct violence include, bullying, assault, arson, rape, etc.


Structural Violence

Structural violence is subtle, indirect but highly insidous. Structural violence inolves institutional attitudinal polices, (be it social, economic or otherwise) that hinder the unfolding of human potentials. Examples of structural violence are, inequalities, social injustice, marginalization, etc.


Cultural Violence

Cultural violence is the acceptance of direct or structural violence as a norm. Acceptance or non-challenge of inequalities or deprivations are examples of cultural violence.
