Ukraine ( Ukrainian Україна , Ukrajina ) - a unitary state , located in Eastern Europe . It borders on the north with Belarus , on the west with Poland , Slovakia and Hungary , on the south with Romania and Moldova , the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov , on the north-east and east with the Russian Federation . The capital of Ukraine is Kiev . Ukraine is a founding member of the United Nations , a member of the World Trade Organization , the Council of Europe , the International Atomic Energy Agency , the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) as well as regional and sub-regional organizations, i.e. the OSCE , GUAM and the Organization for Economic Cooperation of States Black Sea . Ukraine has been a sovereign state since 1991; in 2009 it joined the Eastern Partnership program , since 2014 it has been a country associated with the European Union , and since January 1, 2016 it is a member of a free trade zone with the European Union. According to the IMF report , this country has the lowest GDP per capita in Europe, amounting to USD 4,300 in 2021.
