Welcome! My name is Alison and I am an avid traveler. I'm starting to chronicle my journeys so that I can share my passion for travel with others and give you tips to make your dream trip happen! Come along with me on Instagram! Alpaca our bags 😉. I'm planning my next trip to the Grand Canyon, a gorgeous, awe-inspiring place located in Arizona, USA.
The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in Arizona, United States. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters).
The first place to start planning for a wonderful trip to the Canyon is to visit the official Grand Canyon National Park website. It is full of helpful, up to date information that will help you plan your visit properly. It is so important to check all government websites for information on travel within the USA before booking a trip so that you may find out what changes are in place during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency.
Next thing you should do is prepare for the weather there. The great depth of Grand Canyon produces a variety of conditions between the South Rim and Phantom Ranch. Temperatures usually vary by 20 ºF (11 ºC) between the top and the bottom. In the summer (June – August) temperatures often exceed 100 ºF (38 ºC) at the bottom of the canyon. The summer heat gives way to a cooler but nonetheless pleasant fall period with average high temperatures gradually falling from the 60s (16-21°C) in September through the 50s (10-15°C) by November along the Rim, and from the 90s (32-37°C) in September to near 70 (21°C) by November along the river. It's really important to check what temps will be for the season you'll be there. Some things you will definitely want to pack for this trip are:
- Comfortable, sturdy shoes (or hiking boots if you plan to head to the bottom)
- A backpack
- Light layers
- A hat
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Snacks
- A reusable water bottle or camelpak (you'll need lots of water to hydrate)
- A camera and/or battery pack for any devices (you'll want to take some photos!)
- Bandages or a small first aid kit
