Astronomy is under threat. We are in real danger of cutting ourselves off from new knowledge about the universe as Earth becomes more and more swaddled in a fog of scattered light and radio emission, and surrounded by objects orbiting in space. This bleak prospect was both the motivation behind IAU Symposium 196, and the clear warning voiced by the participants who converged on Vienna from 25 countries around the world. But it is not too late. Action by local, national and international agencies, can radically improve the situation for astronomy and such action often brings wider environmental benefits too.
