6 Tips for Raising a Well-Behaved Cat

When you adopt a kitten, you take on the responsibility of training them on a number of things. First, of course, is the important task of litter box training, but then what? Raising a kitten successfully requires more than just letting them roam around the home, hoping they’ll just be a good cat. There are things to consider!
  1. Set house rules – Raising a well-behaved kitty relies on setting rules for the home when they are very young. For example, if you don’t want them on furniture, or on counter tops, teach this early on. It’s harder to correct behavior later than to simply start them off knowing the rules from kitten hood. Make sure that all family members know the rules and remain consistent with them.
  2. Hold them often – A cuddled kitten will grow up to become a socialized, contented cat. Start handling your kitten from the time they are born. As they mature, you can also teach your children proper handling techniques. Encourage petting and gentle touch to get them used to interaction from you and others.
  3. Introduce other animals slowly – Make sure your kitten is separated from other pets until they are litter box trained and fully vaccinated. Do very slow, supervised introductions and monitor activity closely. Most well-behaved felines are good with other pets, provided they didn’t have bad experiences that could alter their behavior toward other animals.
  4. Redirect, don’t punish – If your kitten or young cat does something they shouldn’t, redirect them by moving them to a neutral spot and encourage the behavior you want. Reward your cat when they do the right things with verbal praise and small treats.
  5. Teach them commands – Sure, your cat may not want to roll over or beg, but you can teach them to come to you when called. This is not only important for safety, but it is also a way to further the bond you share.
  6. Maintain wellness examinations – Starting your purr pal off on the right paw means ensuring they are healthy. A happy cat is one who is healthy, alert, free from parasites and illness, and has good behavior. All of this can be assessed and achieved during your kitten or cat’s wellness appointment.
