The scientific name for a rabbit is Oryctolagus cuniculus.
Domesticated rabbits are included in the order Lagomorpha which
includes their wild counterparts, hares.
Originally domesticated as livestock, rabbits are now one of the top
pets that people care for. In the wild, rabbits live in underground
habitats called warrens. In captivity and homes, rabbits are often kept
in small cages like those of hamsters, mice, and small rodents. However,
they are much more similar in care as a cat. They can even be litter
trained! Some bunny owners use large dog pens while others have their
furry friends free and roaming their homes.
