The Facts
There was a 20.4% increase in the number of people sleeping on the street across
Australia (ABS 2011 vs ABS 2016).
Women aged over 55 are the fastest-growing group of homeless
Australians (ABS 2011 vs ABS 2016).
1 in 201 Australians are currently homeless (ABS 2016).
Nearly 60% of homeless people are aged under 35 years (ABS 2016).
In 2017-2018: 44,116 people requesting short-term or emergency
accommodation & 99,370 people needed long term accommodation but did
not receive any or were only given a referral (AIHW 2018)
