The
Loire Valley, a region of France, is best known for its "historic towns, stunning
architecture, and world-class wines".
Most notable are the Renaissance-style castles (in French,
châteaux) that occupy this region. There are over three hundred
châteaux in the Loire Valley. Some of the most visited and popular castles
include
Château de Chambord,
Château de Chenonceau,
Château de Villandry,
Château d'Amboise
and
Château d'Azay-le-Rideau.
They span across a number of cities such as Amboise, Angers, Chinon,
Nantes, Orléans, Saumur and Tours. While few of the châteaux remain
privately owned, some operate as hotels or local bed-and-breakfasts and
many others are open to the public and attract hundreds of thousands of
tourists each year.
