The Karate Kid 💔

The Greatest Tragedy since Romeo and Juliet

(Actually, it's way better than Romeo and Juliet)

Aristotle's characteristics of a tragic hero

Virtuous - Johnny vehemently defends his friends and his studio, which is the closest thing he has to a family.

Tragic flaw - Pride - he is terrified to lose his standing at Cobra Kai because he doesn't know who he is outside of it.

Tortured - He was being physically and psychologically abused by Jon Kreese for years and had no one in his life to look out for him.

Audience response - Watching Johnny lose the championship, which is his only sense of self, to a kid who barely started training in martial arts off a cheap and illegal kick, was absolutely gut wrenching.

Death or great suffering - Johnny experiences immense suffering in his life, which is why his persona of the popular karate kid is so important to him. Unlike Daniel, he has no good influences guiding him in life.
