The Maine coon (MCO) is a large semi-long-haired purebred cat originating from the northeastern corner of the United States , in particular the state of Maine , and the border areas with southeasternmost Canada . The cat breed is today considered the world's largest domestic cat breed , but its actual origin is unclear. However, the Maine coon is considered the first (oldest) cat breed to originate from America , and it is the only long-haired cat of American origin. That is why it is also called American longhair .
