As the morning sun rises lazily on October 1st, its light sends a beam of autumn hues through your lacy curtians. Its shattered, shimmering rays blanket you in its warmth, and you think to yourself; Is there any time as lovely as October?
For me, nothing is as pleasurable as breathing in crisp autumnal air, inhaling all of its glory and soaking my soul in warm tea. October to me is the month I was born, and the month where I live the most. The month where the whole world shifts from the September school stress to the calm excitment that crunchy leaves and scary movies bring. Follow me along in this immersive experince, where together we shall explore all October has to offer.
Click here to immerse yourself! You gently graze your fingers along an abundace of knitted sweaters, sending you into a state of tactile delight. Each item of clothing as soft as the other. It's chilly out, so you select a moss green poloneck... it reminds you of the thick forest vista outside your window. As you pull on your plaid trouers you decide to explore those forests that you're so fond of. In preparation for this, cozy knit socks are necessary to sheld your feet from the wet puddles gathering in the forest's nooks and crannies. In a hurry you pop on your favorite pair of chestnut loafers, and pack your satchel for your autumn adventure. Before you head out you look in the mirror and tousle your hair; if October was a person, it would be you.
As you embark on your journey into the green abyss, you open spotify to find the perfect song to mirror your reality. As you scroll, you begin to examine the music in front of you... if October had a soundtrack, what would it be? You go straight to your favorite genre, rock, but it doesn't seem to do nature's glorious forest justice. You start and skip song after song, genre after genre. Until you finally reach ''Tis Autumn' by Nat King Cole & His Trio. It's buttery melodies send a warm tingle through your stomach, that reaches out as far as your finger tips. In this moment you conclude... If October had a soundtrack, it would be jazz.
You finally reach the thick of the forest. As you gaze up at the
gaps of golden sunlight peaking through the blazing orange leaves
you recall a poem by Robert Frost.
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
This recollection speaks to you as nothing provides more inspiration
to the human mind as an early morning walk in October.
Energised by Robert Frost's words of wisdom, you decide to look into more pieces of litature that encapsulate the unforgettable mood of October. You start to read books that share the darkness yet comfort that the cycle of life and death bring, books that feel like stormy nights and taste like halloween candy; The Secret History, Wuthering Heights, Carrie and Dead Poets Society. Inspired, you light a candle by your bed and begin to formalate your own poetic rhythms, as nothing brings you more joy as literature about October.
As you begin to get sleepy from all your writing, you decide to wind down with a film. You inspect your shelf flooded with DVDs, trying to identify the perfect movie that feels like October. You consider autumn classics first: Dead Poets Society, Flipped, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban. But nothing calls your name, so you move onto spooky films that remind you of your childhood slumber parties: Coraline, Corspe bride, IT. But once again you still can't seem to find the perfect one, when suddenly, peeking from behind the shelf you spot an old copy of 'When Harry Met Sally'. Bingo . You slide it into your DVD player and wrap yourself in a blanket with a cup of piping hot tea. The romance of New York at autumn time makes you excited for potentanl love in your future. As you watch the film with immense comfort, you decide that watching autumn movies in October is your favourite thing to do.
That evening, as you lay in bed, you are overwhelmed with excitment for the 31st. The prospect of scary movies with your friends, baking ghost shaped cookies and dressing up as your favourite character leaves you shaking with anticipation. In that momemnt you decide to host a Halloween party this year. You flip through themes in your head for your party, stuck between a Stranger Things Upside Down Party, a Muder Mystery organza or a Harry Potter feast. When you finally decide on a Harry Potter feast, you get out of bed and pull out some old recipe books. While you dash through the pages, in an attempt to find the perfect meal, you decide to get in the Halloween mood. You reach over to you record player and place the needle on your Favourite halloween record (Play Me). The butterflies in your stomach cannot contain themelves, you and think... Halloween, what a perfect way to end the lovliest time of the year.
