King St. Stephen was the first king of Hungary who lived at the time of the millennium. Pope Gregory VII
canonized him
on 20th August 1083 for making Hungary a Christian state and considered the tutelary saint of Hungary. Queen
Maria
Theresa proclaimed} this day a national state holiday in 1771. The event has been held each year as the
saint’s
feast
day ever since then. On 20th August the Hungarians celebrate the foundation of the state.
