A little more than a decade ago, there was talk in Venezuela of a
golden generation, measured by the country's sports performance
during the years of the boom in oil revenues.
It was at that time that Yulimar Rojas, a very tall girl who was
initially interested in volleyball, arrived at the sports center where
Velasquez found that he could put her to shine in athletics. Then came
the competitive trips to which he accompanied her: the United States,
Canada, Peru, Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, the Pan American Games, the
