I’m over 30 and I am applying for an MBA in a top B school in the United States. I have talked with students who achieve their target schools and tend to be very romantic about the process. They also start with more advantages than some of us, financially or in terms of confidence. Therefore, I decided to start this blog. My experience is not everyone’s experience, but you will find honesty and a realistic approach to my process in this blog. I am over 30, I do not have the savings to do an MBA (who does it?), and I will have to resign from my current job to pursue one. My family is not wealthy- not even close. I have never attended a bilingual school. I am a woman from Latin America in a country whose currency is getting less worthy every month, and let me tell you that impostor syndrome is worst than it seems. I am an introvert and have to make enormous efforts to keep up with Americans networking style. And finally, I have never worked in business. So, what could go wrong? 🤷🏽
The big question for me, which should be the first question for you, is why an MBA?, and the second question, this question does not apply to all the readers, why an MBA in your 30s? I will answer the first question later, but for now, I want you to understand why the second question haunts me. Why an MBA varies according to our personal stories, but the second question embodies some of the social pressures we face, which are particularly strong for women in Latin American countries.
