Developed by the craftsmen of Iznik (an ancient Anatolian town a short ferry and minibus ride away from modern-day Istanbul), the pottery tradition replaces the traditional clay used in other ceramics with quartz.
The bright white base created by the quartz makes the four traditional colors found in Iznik pieces stand out under a thick transparent glaze.
The four colours traditionally used to decorate the tiles are turqoise, cobalt, malachite and coral, shown in the intricate tile design below:
